How to Clear Cache on iPhone: Safari, Chrome and Apps

Clearing the cache on your iPhone can help fix apps that are acting strangely, remove temporary data and occasionally free up some storage space. However, you don’t need to clear your cache regularly.

Your iPhone and its apps use cached data to make frequently accessed content load faster. For example, Safari may store images and other website elements locally so that they don’t have to be downloaded every time you revisit a webpage.

Most of the time, this is helpful and doesn’t take up enough storage to worry about. But when cached data becomes unusually large or an app starts behaving incorrectly, clearing it can be a useful troubleshooting step.

Unlike Android, iOS doesn’t provide a single button to clear the entire system cache. Instead, the process depends on whether you’re trying to clear Safari data, another browser’s cache, an individual app’s cache or temporary system files.

How to Clear Safari Cache on iPhone

Safari is Apple’s default web browser, and clearing its cache also removes browsing history and other website data.

To clear Safari’s cached data:

  1. Open Safari on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the three-dot (…) button next to the address bar.
  3. Select Bookmarks using the book icon.
  4. Tap the clock icon to open your browsing history.
  5. Tap the three-dot (…) button again.
  6. Select Clear.
  7. Choose the time period for which you want to remove website data.
  8. If you use multiple Safari profiles, select the profile you want to clear.
  9. Enable Close All Tabs if you also want to close your open tabs.
  10. Tap Clear History.

What Happens When You Clear Safari Cache?

Safari’s clearing option removes more than just cached files.

Depending on the selected time range, it can also remove:

  • Browsing history
  • Cookies
  • Cached website files
  • Website permissions
  • Other stored browsing data

You may need to sign back into websites afterward. Some websites may also ask you to grant permissions again.

Webpages can initially load more slowly after clearing the cache because Safari needs to download frequently used content again.

How to Clear Chrome Cache on iPhone

If you use Google Chrome instead of Safari, Chrome provides more control over exactly what you want to delete.

Here’s how:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot (…) menu.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Tap Privacy and security.
  5. Select Delete Browsing Data.
  6. Choose a Time range.
  7. Select Browsing data.
  8. Check Cached images and files.
  9. Leave other categories unchecked if you only want to remove cached files.
  10. Tap the option to delete the selected data.

Chrome also shows the amount of storage being used by cached files, making it easier to decide whether clearing them is worthwhile.

How to Clear an App’s Cache on iPhone

iOS doesn’t provide a universal “Clear Cache” button for every app. Instead, individual apps can choose whether to provide their own cache-management tools.

Some popular apps include built-in options for clearing temporary data.

Clear Spotify Cache

Spotify allows users to remove cached data without deleting their downloaded music.

Open Spotify and:

Profile → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline

Scroll down to find the cache information and tap Clear next to the cache option.

Be careful not to confuse cached files with downloaded music. Your offline downloads may occupy substantially more storage than the cache.

Clear Telegram Cache

Telegram provides extensive storage-management controls.

Go to:

Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage

From there, you can see which types of files are consuming storage and manage cached media.

Telegram also lets you configure how long different types of cached files are retained, set a maximum cache size and review storage usage by individual chats.

This makes Telegram particularly useful for managing large amounts of media.

What If an App Doesn’t Have a Clear Cache Option?

Some apps, including Instagram, may not provide a dedicated cache-clearing button in their iPhone versions.

In that case, you can use Apple’s Offload App feature.

Go to:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage

Find and select the app you want to refresh.

Then tap:

Offload App

This removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data on your iPhone.

Once the app has been offloaded, you can tap Reinstall App to download it again.

You can also reinstall the app later by tapping its icon on the Home Screen.

How to Completely Clear an App’s Data

If offloading doesn’t solve the problem, you can completely uninstall the app and reinstall it.

This is a more aggressive solution because deleting an app can remove its locally stored data.

After reinstalling, you may need to:

  • Sign in again
  • Restore app settings
  • Download offline content again
  • Configure notifications and permissions

For troubleshooting a problematic app, however, a fresh installation can sometimes solve issues that clearing cached data cannot.

How to Clear the iPhone’s System Cache

Unlike some Android phones, the iPhone doesn’t offer a dedicated button for clearing the entire system cache.

Instead, restarting the iPhone is the simplest way to clear certain temporary system files.

How to Restart an iPhone

On Face ID iPhone models:

  1. Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button.
  2. Continue holding until the power-off slider appears.
  3. Drag the slider to turn off the iPhone.
  4. Wait for a minute or two.
  5. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

You can also go to:

Settings → General → Shut Down

Restarting your iPhone doesn’t delete your photos, apps, messages or other permanent files.

Does Clearing Cache Free Up iPhone Storage?

It can, but usually not by a huge amount.

Cached data is generally temporary and is designed to improve performance. Your iPhone and apps will begin creating new cached files after you clear them.

If you’re running low on storage, clearing cache can therefore be only a short-term solution.

Instead, check:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage

This screen shows which apps and types of content are consuming the most space.

Large downloads are often a bigger storage problem than cached files.

Check Downloaded Content Before Clearing Cache

Music, videos, podcasts and messaging media can consume considerably more storage than cache.

For example, if you use YouTube Premium to download videos for offline viewing, those downloads may occupy significantly more space than your browser cache.

Similarly, check downloaded content in:

  • Music streaming apps
  • Podcast apps
  • Video streaming services
  • Messaging apps
  • Social media apps

Deleting content you no longer need can provide a much larger storage benefit than repeatedly clearing cache.

Should You Clear Your iPhone Cache Regularly?

No.

There’s generally no reason to clear your iPhone cache every day or every week.

Cached data exists for a reason: it helps apps and websites load frequently used content faster.

Repeatedly deleting it can actually be counterproductive because your iPhone will simply need to recreate the cached data.

Instead, consider clearing cache when:

  • An app starts behaving strangely
  • A website isn’t loading correctly
  • Your browser is using unusually large amounts of storage
  • An app is displaying outdated information
  • You’re troubleshooting performance problems
  • Temporary data has grown unusually large

The Best Way to Free Up iPhone Storage

If your iPhone is running out of space, don’t make cache clearing your first or only solution.

Start by opening:

Settings → General → iPhone Storage

Then identify the largest storage users.

Deleting unused apps, old videos, large message attachments and offline downloads can usually make a much bigger difference.

Final Thoughts

Clearing cache on an iPhone is useful, but it shouldn’t become a routine maintenance task.

Safari and Chrome provide straightforward ways to remove browser data, while some apps such as Spotify and Telegram offer their own cache-management tools.

For apps without a dedicated cache option, Offload App can be a useful alternative. Restarting your iPhone can also help clear certain temporary system files.

The key is to clear cache strategically rather than constantly. If an app is working normally and your iPhone has plenty of free storage, there’s usually no reason to touch its cache.
