Instagram is introducing a new feature designed to make short-form video editing faster and easier. Called First Draft, the new tool can automatically trim silences and pauses from video clips before arranging them into an editable timeline.

The feature is aimed at creators who spend time cleaning up raw footage before making creative decisions about their Reels. Instead of manually searching for awkward pauses, silent moments and unnecessary gaps, Instagram’s First Draft can handle much of that basic editing work automatically.

What Is Instagram First Draft?

First Draft is a new editing tool built directly into Instagram’s Reels workflow. Users can select multiple video clips from their Reels Gallery and tap the First Draft option.

Instagram then analyzes the footage, removes unnecessary pauses and silences, and places the edited clips into a timeline. Creators can preview the automatically generated draft and continue editing it before publishing.

Users can still make additional changes, including adjusting clips, adding music, text, effects and other creative elements. If the automatically created version is already suitable, it can also be posted directly to Instagram.

The goal is simple: reduce the time spent on repetitive editing tasks and allow creators to focus more on the creative side of making videos.

How to Use First Draft on Instagram

Using the new feature is expected to be straightforward:

  1. Open Instagram and start creating a Reel.
  2. Select video clips from your Reels Gallery.
  3. Tap the First Draft option.
  4. Instagram automatically analyzes the clips.
  5. Pauses and unnecessary silent sections are trimmed.
  6. The clips are arranged into an editable timeline.
  7. Review the result and make additional edits if needed.
  8. Share the Reel to your feed or Story.

Meta says the feature can also be used shortly after recording new footage directly through Instagram.

A Faster Way to Edit Reels

Video editing can be one of the most time-consuming parts of creating content. For many short-form creators, the first step often involves removing awkward pauses, long silences and unnecessary sections before adding captions, music or visual effects.

First Draft is designed to simplify that process.

Instead of requiring creators to manually review every second of footage, Instagram can automatically prepare an initial version of the video. This gives users a starting point that they can continue refining.

The feature could be especially useful for creators who regularly produce talking videos, interviews, tutorials, vlogs and other content where pauses naturally occur between sentences.

How Is First Draft Different From Meta’s AI Editing Tools?

Meta has been heavily investing in artificial intelligence tools across its platforms. Instagram already includes several AI-powered experiments and creative features.

In April 2025, Meta launched Edits, a standalone video editing application designed to provide creators with more advanced editing tools. The app included various features intended to make the production of Reels and short-form videos easier.

However, Meta has not specifically described First Draft as an AI feature.

According to reports, the feature does not rely on generative AI in the same way as some of Meta’s other editing tools. Instead, it is reportedly based on machine learning technology that can identify pauses and unnecessary sections within video clips.

The distinction may seem technical, but it highlights a different approach. First Draft focuses on solving a practical editing problem rather than generating entirely new content.

Why First Draft Could Be Useful for Creators

Instagram has experimented with numerous AI features in recent months, but not every new feature has been essential to the everyday experience of posting photos and videos.

First Draft stands out because it addresses a common problem.

Creators frequently spend significant time performing basic editing tasks before they can focus on storytelling, pacing and visual style. By automatically trimming unnecessary moments, First Draft could help reduce that workload.

For professional creators, even saving a few minutes on each video could become significant when producing content regularly.

The feature may also help casual users who want better-looking Reels without learning complicated editing software.

Instagram Continues to Focus on Short-Form Video

The launch of First Draft demonstrates Instagram’s continued focus on competing in the fast-growing short-form video market.

Reels remain a major part of Instagram’s strategy as the platform competes with TikTok, YouTube Shorts and other video-focused platforms.

Making video creation easier is important because more creators generally means more content for users to watch. Features that simplify editing can encourage people who might normally avoid video production to create and share more content.

Instagram’s approach with First Draft focuses less on complicated effects and more on improving the basic editing workflow.

Availability

Meta says First Draft will initially be available for iOS users.

The company has not yet announced an official launch date for Android devices. This means Android users may need to wait before gaining access to the new automatic video trimming feature.

Availability could also vary depending on region, app version and account eligibility during the initial rollout.

Final Thoughts

Instagram’s First Draft feature may not be the most flashy update the platform has introduced, but it could be one of the most practical for creators.

Automatically removing silences and pauses can save valuable editing time and make the process of creating Reels much easier. Instead of spending time cleaning up raw footage, users can focus more on music, storytelling, captions and creative decisions.

As short-form video continues to dominate social media, tools that make content creation faster and simpler could become increasingly important. For Instagram creators, First Draft could be a useful addition that turns raw clips into a ready-to-edit video with just a few taps.
