If you have an old Android phone collecting dust in a drawer, you may be able to give it a useful second life. Instead of throwing it away or spending money on new networking equipment, you can potentially use it to help improve Wi-Fi coverage in weak areas of your home.

Wi-Fi dead zones can be frustrating. You may have a strong internet connection in your living room but struggle with weak or unstable signals in a bedroom, kitchen, upstairs area or other distant corner of your home. A dedicated Wi-Fi extender or mesh system can solve the problem, but those solutions can cost money.

An old Android phone may provide a simple alternative in certain situations. With the right device and Android version, you can use its wireless and hotspot capabilities to create an additional connection point for nearby devices.

Here’s what you need to know.

Can an Old Android Phone Really Work as a Wi-Fi Extender?

The basic idea is simple: your Android phone connects to your existing home network and shares a connection with other devices through its hotspot or tethering features.

Depending on your Android device and manufacturer, Wi-Fi sharing capabilities can vary. Some phones can share an existing Wi-Fi connection through a hotspot, while others may require mobile data or offer different tethering options.

Because of these differences, it is important to check your phone’s hotspot settings before relying on it as a permanent Wi-Fi extender.

Still, if you already have an unused Android phone, trying this method can be a quick and affordable way to improve connectivity in a small problem area.

Why Use an Old Android Phone?

Old smartphones still contain useful hardware, including:

  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Wireless hotspot capabilities
  • A rechargeable battery
  • Processing power
  • Bluetooth support
  • USB connectivity

Instead of sending the device directly to recycling, repurposing it can help extend its useful life.

Using an old phone as a temporary networking tool can also save you money if you only need better coverage in one specific area.

What Does an Android Wi-Fi Extender Actually Do?

Think of the phone as an additional connection point.

The Android device connects to your home internet network and can provide another wireless connection for nearby devices, depending on its supported features.

For example, you may place the phone near an area where your primary router’s signal begins to weaken. Devices close to the phone may then connect through the phone’s shared connection.

However, there is an important limitation: this does not automatically make your phone equivalent to a professional mesh Wi-Fi system.

Dedicated mesh systems are designed specifically to manage wireless traffic, roaming and network performance across multiple locations. An Android phone is better viewed as a temporary or supplementary solution.

How to Set Up Your Android Phone

Before starting, make sure your old Android phone is:

  • Fully charged
  • Updated to the latest software version it supports
  • Connected to your home Wi-Fi network
  • Located near a power outlet

The exact menu names may vary depending on your phone’s manufacturer and Android version.

Step 1: Connect to Your Home Wi-Fi

Open the Settings app on your Android phone.

Go to:

Network & Internet > Internet

or, on some devices:

Connections > Wi-Fi

Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password if required.

Make sure the phone has a stable internet connection before continuing.

Step 2: Open Hotspot and Tethering Settings

Next, go to:

Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & Tethering

On some Samsung devices, this may appear as:

Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering

Look for Wi-Fi sharing, hotspot or tethering options.

The available settings may be different depending on your Android phone.

Step 3: Configure Your Wi-Fi Hotspot

If your device supports sharing the existing Wi-Fi connection, enable the hotspot feature.

You should configure:

  • Network name
  • Password
  • Security settings
  • Wi-Fi band, if available

Choose a network name that is easy to recognize.

You should also use a strong password to prevent unauthorized users from connecting.

For example:

Network Name: Home Wi-Fi Extension

Avoid using easily guessed passwords such as your name or phone number.

Step 4: Choose Between 2.4GHz and 5GHz

Some Android phones allow you to choose the Wi-Fi frequency band.

2.4GHz

Advantages:

  • Better range
  • Better penetration through walls
  • Works with more older devices

Disadvantages:

  • Usually slower
  • More interference from other devices

5GHz

Advantages:

  • Faster speeds
  • Less interference
  • Better for nearby devices

Disadvantages:

  • Shorter range
  • Weaker performance through walls

If your goal is to cover a nearby room with better performance, 5GHz may be useful. For longer distances, 2.4GHz may provide better coverage.

Where Should You Place the Phone?

Location is extremely important.

Don’t place the phone inside the area where there is already no Wi-Fi signal at all. The phone first needs a reasonably stable connection to your primary network.

A good location is usually somewhere between:

Your Wi-Fi router → Old Android phone → Weak Wi-Fi area

Try moving the phone to different locations and test the signal strength.

Keep the phone close to a power outlet because continuously running wireless features can drain the battery quickly.

Keep the Phone Plugged In

Running a hotspot for long periods can consume significant battery power.

For the best results:

  • Keep the phone connected to a charger
  • Place it on a stable surface
  • Avoid covering the device
  • Make sure it does not overheat

Older phones can become warm when continuously handling network traffic.

If the phone becomes excessively hot, turn off the hotspot and allow it to cool down.

The Limitations of Using an Android Phone

While this can be a useful trick, there are several limitations.

It Will Not Increase Your Internet Speed

If your internet connection is already slow, using another device will not magically increase your broadband speed.

For example, if your home internet connection provides 20 Mbps, an Android phone acting as a connection-sharing device cannot turn that into a 100 Mbps connection.

Performance May Be Limited

Dedicated Wi-Fi extenders and mesh systems are specifically designed for networking.

An old smartphone may have:

  • Older Wi-Fi hardware
  • Limited range
  • Lower processing power
  • Battery and heating issues

It May Create a Separate Network

Depending on how your device handles Wi-Fi sharing, you may need to manually connect your devices to the phone’s network.

This means seamless roaming may not work the same way it does with a professional mesh Wi-Fi system.

Smart Home Devices May Have Issues

Some smart devices work best when all devices are connected to the same local network.

A separate hotspot network could potentially cause communication problems between certain smart home devices.

Android Phone vs. Wi-Fi Extender vs. Mesh System

Old Android Phone

Best for:

  • Temporary solutions
  • Small Wi-Fi problem areas
  • Users who already have an unused phone
  • Saving money

Wi-Fi Extender

Best for:

  • Improving coverage in one or two rooms
  • Simple installation
  • More reliable long-term use

Mesh Wi-Fi System

Best for:

  • Large homes
  • Multiple floors
  • Seamless device roaming
  • Strong and consistent coverage

If you need a quick and free solution, the old Android phone method is worth experimenting with.

If you constantly experience Wi-Fi problems throughout your entire home, investing in a dedicated Wi-Fi extender or mesh system will usually provide better results.

Another Option: USB Tethering

If you need a more stable connection for a single device, USB tethering may also be useful.

Connect your Android phone to a compatible computer using a USB cable and enable USB tethering.

This can provide a wired connection in certain situations and may be more stable than relying entirely on a wireless signal.

However, the exact functionality depends on your phone, network connection and Android version.

Is It Worth Using an Old Android Phone as a Wi-Fi Extender?

Yes, for the right situation.

If you already have an old Android phone sitting unused at home, experimenting with its hotspot and tethering features costs nothing. It may help improve connectivity in a small area where your primary Wi-Fi signal is weak.

However, it should not be considered a complete replacement for a modern router, dedicated Wi-Fi extender or mesh networking system.

The best way to think about it is as a practical workaround.

You can give an old smartphone a second life, potentially improve coverage in a problem area and avoid spending money on additional hardware. For temporary use or small homes, that may be all you need.

For larger homes or serious connectivity problems, a dedicated networking solution will deliver better performance, wider coverage and more reliable results.

Before buying new hardware, though, it’s worth checking what that old Android phone in your drawer can still do.
