SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of Cursor, the AI coding startup known for its popular AI-powered development tools. The deal brings Cursor into SpaceX’s expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem and gives the startup access to massive computing resources for developing new AI models.

The acquisition was first announced in June, although the relationship between the two companies reportedly began earlier in April, when SpaceX and Cursor started working together on AI model training.

Cursor says the partnership will now give it access to “the largest fleet of GPUs in the world,” providing the computing power needed to train more capable AI models while potentially lowering the cost of delivering those models to customers.

SpaceX Completes Cursor Acquisition

Cursor has built a strong reputation in the software development industry with its AI-powered coding platform, which helps developers write, understand, modify and debug code using artificial intelligence.

With the acquisition now complete, Cursor will become part of SpaceX’s broader AI strategy.

According to the information provided by the companies, SpaceX paid approximately $60 billion to acquire the startup.

The move represents another major step in SpaceX’s growing push into artificial intelligence and follows its broader integration with Elon Musk’s AI business.

Cursor Gets Access to Massive GPU Resources

One of the biggest advantages of the acquisition for Cursor is access to SpaceX’s enormous computing infrastructure.

Training advanced AI models requires huge amounts of computing power, particularly when developers want to build models capable of performing complex coding and agentic tasks.

Cursor says the access to SpaceX’s GPU infrastructure will allow it to develop and train more advanced models while reducing the cost of providing them to customers.

The company believes this could give it significantly more flexibility when experimenting with new AI technologies.

SpaceXAI and Cursor Develop Grok Models Together

The acquisition also brings Cursor closer to SpaceXAI’s AI development efforts.

Earlier this year, SpaceX merged with Elon Musk’s AI company xAI. In July, xAI was officially renamed SpaceXAI.

Following the integration, SpaceXAI and Cursor began working together on AI models specifically designed for coding and other knowledge-intensive tasks.

The first model developed through the partnership was Grok 4.5.

The companies positioned Grok 4.5 as a model optimized for coding, agentic tasks and knowledge work while also emphasizing its lower operating costs.

Grok 4.6 Builds on the Partnership

SpaceXAI and Cursor have since introduced Grok 4.6, which builds on the capabilities of its predecessor.

The newer model was trained to handle a wider range of real-world tasks, including:

  • General software development
  • Web development
  • Coding
  • Computer-aided design
  • Agentic workflows
  • Knowledge-intensive tasks

Cursor says Grok 4.6 provides an early indication of what the companies could accomplish by combining Cursor’s AI coding expertise with SpaceXAI’s computing resources and AI research.

Why the Cursor Acquisition Matters

The acquisition could significantly change the competitive landscape for AI coding tools.

AI-powered software development has become one of the fastest-growing areas of generative AI, with companies competing to build models that can write code, operate development environments and complete increasingly complex programming tasks.

Cursor has already established itself as an important player in this market.

Access to massive GPU infrastructure could allow the company to accelerate model development and potentially reduce inference and training costs.

That could become especially important as AI coding companies increasingly compete on both model quality and price.

SpaceX’s Growing AI Ambitions

The Cursor acquisition highlights how SpaceX’s ambitions have expanded beyond rockets, satellites and space technology.

With SpaceXAI now part of the company’s broader ecosystem, artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important area of investment.

The combination of SpaceX’s computing infrastructure, SpaceXAI’s model development and Cursor’s expertise in AI-powered software development could create a powerful platform for building specialized AI systems.

For developers, the biggest potential benefit could be access to more capable AI coding models at lower prices.

The Future of AI-Powered Coding

AI coding assistants are rapidly evolving from simple autocomplete tools into systems capable of handling larger portions of the software development process.

Modern AI coding models can already generate applications, modify existing code, identify bugs and assist with complex development workflows.

The next stage is expected to involve more autonomous AI agents capable of completing multi-step development tasks with limited human intervention.

Cursor’s partnership with SpaceXAI could accelerate that transition.

Final Thoughts

SpaceX’s completed acquisition of Cursor marks a major development in the AI coding industry.

By combining Cursor’s expertise in AI-powered software development with SpaceXAI’s AI models and massive computing resources, the companies could have the infrastructure needed to build increasingly powerful coding systems.

The development of Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6 already provides an early glimpse of what the combined companies are working toward.

The bigger question now is how quickly Cursor and SpaceXAI can turn their expanded computing capabilities into AI models that are not only more powerful, but also significantly cheaper for developers to use.

If they succeed, the acquisition could have a major impact on the future of AI-assisted software development.
